We can dig further into the company’s revenue dynamics by analyzing its most important segments, Products and Services, which are 68.1% and 31.9% of revenue. Taking a step back, we can see that AeroVironment’s margin dropped by 5.5 percentage points during that time. Almost any movement in the wrong direction is undesirable because it is already burning cash. If the trend continues, it could signal it’s in the middle of a big investment cycle.

We struggled to find many positives in these results. Its full-year revenue guidance missed and its full-year EBITDA guidance fell short of Wall Street’s estimates. Overall, this quarter could have been better. The stock traded down 8.3% to $203.95 immediately after reporting.

The latest quarterly earnings matters, sure, but we actually think longer-term fundamentals and valuation matter more. Investors should consider all these pieces before deciding whether or not to invest in AeroVironment.
AeroVironment isn’t a terrible business, but it doesn’t pass our quality test. Although its revenue growth was exceptional over the last five years and is expected to accelerate over the next 12 months, its relatively low ROIC suggests management has struggled to find compelling investment opportunities. And while the company’s projected EPS for the next year implies the company’s fundamentals will improve, the downside is its declining operating margin shows the business has become less efficient.
AeroVironment’s P/E ratio based on the next 12 months is 47.6x. This valuation tells us a lot of optimism is priced in - we think other companies feature superior fundamentals at the moment.
Wall Street analysts have a consensus one-year price target of $355.17 on the company (compared to the current share price of $203.95).
