The latest quarterly earnings matters, sure, but we actually think longer-term fundamentals and valuation matter more. Investors should consider all these pieces before deciding whether or not to invest in Neogen.
We cheer for all companies helping people live better, but in the case of Neogen, we’ll be cheering from the sidelines. Although its revenue growth was solid over the last five years, it’s expected to deteriorate over the next 12 months and its diminishing returns show management's prior bets haven't worked out. On top of that, the company’s declining EPS over the last five years makes it a less attractive asset to the public markets.
Neogen’s P/E ratio based on the next 12 months is 18.9x. This valuation tells us a lot of optimism is priced in - we think there are better stocks to buy right now.
Wall Street analysts have a consensus one-year price target of $8.17 on the company (compared to the current share price of $8.84), implying they don’t see much short-term potential in Neogen.
