We were impressed by how significantly Ducommun blew past analysts’ EBITDA expectations this quarter. We were also excited its adjusted operating income outperformed Wall Street’s estimates by a wide margin. On the other hand, its revenue slightly missed. Overall, we think this was a decent quarter with some key metrics above expectations. The market seemed to be hoping for more, and the stock traded down 4.2% to $121.49 immediately after reporting.
12. Is Now The Time To Buy Ducommun?
Before making an investment decision, investors should account for Ducommun’s business fundamentals and valuation in addition to what happened in the latest quarter.
We cheer for all companies making their customers lives easier, but in the case of Ducommun, we’ll be cheering from the sidelines. First off, its revenue growth was uninspiring over the last five years. While its projected EPS for the next year implies the company’s fundamentals will improve, the downside is its relatively low ROIC suggests management has struggled to find compelling investment opportunities. On top of that, its declining operating margin shows the business has become less efficient.
Ducommun’s P/E ratio based on the next 12 months is 28.7x. This multiple tells us a lot of good news is priced in - we think there are better opportunities elsewhere.
