We were impressed by how significantly Hexcel blew past analysts’ Commercial aerospace revenue expectations this quarter. We were also glad its Space & defense revenue topped Wall Street’s estimates. On the other hand, its full-year EPS guidance missed and its full-year revenue guidance fell slightly short of Wall Street’s estimates. Overall, this was a softer quarter. The stock traded up 8.9% to $87.31 immediately following the results.

12. Is Now The Time To Buy Hexcel?

Before making an investment decision, investors should account for Hexcel’s business fundamentals and valuation in addition to what happened in the latest quarter.

Hexcel’s business quality ultimately falls short of our standards. First off, its revenue growth was uninspiring over the last five years. And while Hexcel’s expanding operating margin shows the business has become more efficient, its relatively low ROIC suggests management has struggled to find compelling investment opportunities.

Hexcel’s P/E ratio based on the next 12 months is 35.4x. Investors with a higher risk tolerance might like the company, but we think the potential downside is too great. We're fairly confident there are better investments elsewhere.
