The company maintains affiliation agreements with all major networks, including FOX (55 stations), ABC (40), CBS (30), NBC (25), CW (47), and MyNetworkTV (39), allowing it to deliver popular national programming to local audiences.
The company generates revenue primarily through two channels: selling advertising time on its stations and collecting distribution fees from cable, satellite, and streaming providers that carry Sinclair's channels. Sinclair competes with other broadcast television groups like Nexstar Media Group (NASDAQ:NXST), Gray Television (NYSE:GTN), and TEGNA (NYSE:TGNA), as well as with larger media conglomerates such as Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Paramount Global (NASDAQ:PARA) that own local stations.

Taking a step back, we can see that Sinclair’s margin dropped by 12.3 percentage points during that time. If its declines continue, it could signal increasing investment needs and capital intensity.

Sinclair isn’t a terrible business, but it doesn’t pass our quality test. To kick things off, its revenue has declined over the last five years. While its impressive operating margins show it has a highly efficient business model, the downside is its diminishing returns show management's prior bets haven't worked out. On top of that, its cash profitability fell over the last five years.
Sinclair’s P/E ratio based on the next 12 months is 19.5x. Investors with a higher risk tolerance might like the company, but we don’t really see a big opportunity at the moment. We're fairly confident there are better investments elsewhere.
Wall Street analysts have a consensus one-year price target of $17.29 on the company (compared to the current share price of $13.81).
Although the price target is bullish, readers should exercise caution because analysts tend to be overly optimistic.
