A company’s long-term sales performance can indicate its overall quality. Any business can experience short-term success, but top-performing ones enjoy sustained growth for years. AT&T struggled to consistently generate demand over the last five years as its sales dropped at a 4.3% annual rate. This was below our standards and is a sign of poor business quality.

We cheer for all companies serving everyday consumers, but in the case of AT&T, we’ll be cheering from the sidelines. To begin with, its revenue has declined over the last five years. And while its remarkable EPS growth over the last five years shows its profits are trickling down to shareholders, the downside is its Forecasted free cash flow margin for next year suggests the company will fail to improve its cash conversion. On top of that, its projected EPS for the next year is lacking.

AT&T’s P/E ratio based on the next 12 months is 10.3x. This valuation is reasonable, but the company’s shaky fundamentals present too much downside risk. There are better investments elsewhere.

Wall Street analysts have a consensus one-year price target of $29.40 on the company (compared to the current share price of $23.87).
